Red River System Engineer in Richmond, Virginia

Position Overview:

The System Engineer is a highly skilled and technical role focused on the design, integration, and implementation of complex IT systems. This position requires an individual who can support technical architects and program requirements by integrating various systems or components, researching system architectures and configurations, and providing advanced technical insights on solutions. A primary responsibility of this position is to work closely with the Prime Contractor’s Technical Lead, other engineers, and program team in support of execution of this contract providing IT support, technology elements, and data migration between data centers and the cloud to the Department of Justice (DoJ). The System Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting functional analysis, defining and revising hardware and software specifications, and ensuring that the IT systems meet both current and future program needs. The ideal candidate will possess a robust blend of educational background and extensive experience in the field, coupled with an active Department of Justice (DoJ) clearance or ability to obtain one quickly, to effectively support critical engineering tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the design and implementation of IT systems that necessitate the integration of diverse and complex components, ensuring system compatibility and efficiency.

  • Collaborate with technical architects to understand program requirements and contribute to the development of integrated solutions.

  • Conduct in-depth research on system architectures and configurations to inform decision-making and problem-solving processes.

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on the selection of IT solutions, including hardware and software specifications.

  • Assist in the functional analysis process and contribute to the definition of system interface requirements.

  • Support the selection and implementation of various IT techniques and tools to meet program needs, including considerations for present and future capacity requirements.

  • Contribute to the planning and design of facility requirements, data storage solutions, backup strategies, monitoring systems, operations systems, directory services, identity management, access management, and automation.

  • Stay abreast of technological advancements and industry best practices to continuously improve system performance and reliability.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of six years of related experience, or Master’s degree with four years of related experience in IT system design, integration, or a related technical field.

  • Proven experience in supporting complex IT projects and providing high-level technical expertise.

  • An active Department of Justice (DoJ) (or reciprocal) clearance is preferred but not required for this position.

  • Remote support to the program, though on-site meetings with other team members and with customers are required.

  • This position requires travel up to 25% of the time, more heavily during the base period with reduced travel anticipated in option periods.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong technical acumen with the ability to understand and integrate diverse and complex IT system components.

  • Proficient in conducting research and analysis on system architectures and configurations.

  • Ability to provide insightful technical guidance and support to technical architects and program teams.

  • Knowledgeable in hardware and software specifications, as well as functional analysis and system interface definition.

  • Familiarity with IT techniques and tools relevant to system capacity, data storage, backup, monitoring, operations, directory services, identity management, access management, and automation.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.

  • Strong communication skills, with the capacity to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of and experience with storage systems and data migration projects, between data centers as well as into the cloud.

  • Experience supporting data center moves and migrations.

  • Previous experience working with Veeam and Varonis is a plus.

  • Experience with Red Hat Linux is a plus.

  • Previous experience working on Pure Storage, Cisco switching, and Cisco compute is a plus.
